If you’re  a Geek, then I’ll wager that you’ve got at least one of Microsoft’s free Sysinternals utilities, such as Autoruns (startup monitor), on your system.

The program displays specific task manager information, (this application is not a replacement for Windows task manager), including file name, directory path, description, CPU usage, and so on. What sets the application apart, is the unique security risk rating that is applied to running processes.

The major caveat here however is, the user must make the decision whether a particular process, or program, should be terminated, or removed. Thankfully, you can get help in making that decision by clicking on the More Info Tab. Doing so, opens GlarySoft’s web based database where additional information about the specific program/process can be obtained, along with a risk factor for that inquiry, as the following graphic illustrates.

Monitor Running Processes and DLL’s for Free with Process Explorer

Process Explorer provides you with information concerning the handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded on Windows startup or Program launch, and their utilization in real-time. The Process Explorer display splits into two sub-windows. The top window shows a list of the currently running processes, including the names of their root accounts. Information displayed in the bottom window is dependent on the operating mode of Process Explorer. Handle Mode presents a view of the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened. In DLL mode, the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded are shown. Track down which processes have handles open or DLLs loaded through Process Explorers powerful search function.

Process Explorer is extremely useful in locating DLL-version problems, or handle leaks, and to provide insight into the way Windows and applications are working.

It also can identify the process for a given application window or look up a process name in Google; a handy way to spot spyware. Additional features offer detailed information on performance, threads, TCP/IP connections, security settings, and environments.

Process Explorer works on Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Server 2003, and 64-bit versions of Windows for x64 processors, and Windows Vista.
