Ninite – A Jaw Dropping One Shot Multiple Application Installer

imageI’ve used, reviewed, and discarded, a mix of free “One Shot” installer applications – applications which download and install multiple user selected applications, in one pass. The only keeper from the 5 or 6 I’ve looked at is, Ninite .

Since I dedicated a machine to run with Windows 8, a few weeks ago (which has run flawlessly, BTW), I finally got to the point where it was time to install a few of my favorite applications and, of course, I turned to Ninite to get the job done.

I choose to download, and install, the following applications – Chrome, ThunderBird, Google Talk, Glary Utilities, Revo Uninstaller, Songbird and TrueCrypt.

A small downloader (248 KB) – launched from my download folder, started the download and install process – as shown in the following screen capture.

Within a very few minutes (less than 4 minutes), the applications were installed (as shown in Windows 8 Metro UI), and ready to run. And, that’s the “jaw dropping” part – 4 minutes to download and install 7!!!, applications. Wicked!

If you’re a Linux user (and, I’m a dual booter), you haven’t been  forgotten.

Fast facts:

No Clicking Next – Ninite fully automates installers off-screen.

No Toolbars – Ninite automatically says “No” to toolbars and other junk.

Always Up-to-date – A Ninite installer always gets an app’s latest version no matter when you made it.

It Updates Too – Just run your Ninite installer again and it will update the apps to their latest versions.

No Signup – Ninite just works. No account, signup, or client needed.

32 and 64-bit – Ninite installs the best version of an app for your PC.

International – Ninite installs apps in your PC’s language.

If you’re the kind of geek who’s into helping less experienced users – this is a terrific way to help them install the freeware applications that you know, through experience, are a “must have”. Best of all, once the installer is activated Ninite does the rest – automatically and in the background.

System requirements: Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 (x64 support).

Ninite – Use It To Automatically Install Selected Freeware On Family And Friends Computers

Time flies, for sure – it’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since I last looked at Ninite, a bulk downloaders services/application that downloads and installs multiple user selected applications, in one pass.

Just a small sampling of what’s available:

The chances that a computer user will have to rebuild a system at some point is fairly high. There are multiple reasons why this might be necessary – an unrecoverable malware infection; system file corruption; system upgrade; and more.

As a “super geek”, the only reason you’ll rebuild is system upgrade time, hopefully. But, your friends and family … well, that’s a different story.

It’s probable that you (as the “on call” tech expert), have a specific list of freeware applications that you install on all machines on which you get the “help me” call. And, if you do, you can save yourself a “service” call by utilizing Ninite to your advantage.

Here’s an example:

I choose to download the following applications – Klitecodecs, Recuva, Skype, and Winamp. Ninite then created a specific URL – http://ninite.com/klitecodecs-recuva-skype-winamp/, in this case, from which the download was launched.

Should I then wish to share these applications (which will install automatically, without user intervention), with ……. – it’s as easy as sharing the URL.

How cool is that!

Download ZeuAPP – A One Shot, 82 Freeware Applications Installer

image

The chances that a computer user will have to rebuild a system at some point is fairly high. There are multiple reasons why this might be necessary – an unrecoverable malware infection; system file corruption; system upgrade; and more.

Earlier this month, I wrote about a system rebuild on one of my personal machines following the expiry of Windows 7 RC. A long boring reinstall of all the free applications I’m use to running on that machine, was made easier, and less time consuming, by running a very neat software solution, Ninite.

Ninite, allowed me to install selected applications, from a generous listing of freeware applications, in one single pass.

ZeuAPP is a relatively similar type of application installation tool (for the purists out there, yes, there are differences), which can make it much easier to download a host of freeware applications.

Following the installation of this portable application, you will be presented with the following screen from which you can choose a wide range of applications running from Archivers, through Graphic applications, to Utilities, and more.

ZeuApp 2

ZeuApp 3

As the graphics illustrates, you have a choice of visiting the selected application’s Web Site or, downloading the application straightaway.

Following your successful download, the application’s installer package is automatically launched, given you a “no fuss”, “no muss”, installation.

ZeuApp 4

Archivers: 7-Zip, Peazip, TUGzip, IZarc, Universal Extractor.

Audio: Audacity, JetAudio, musikCube, Aimp

Video: Miro, VLC media player, Mplayer, GOM, Winamp

Chat-IM: Skype ,Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk, Pidgin, ICQ, aMSN, Miranda IM, Yahoo! Messenger 10

Internet: Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, Maxthon, Avant Browser, Flock, Thunderbird3,

Download Manager: FlashGet download manager, YeahReader, RSSOwl, WinSCP, FileZilla

CD Burners: CDBurnerXP, ImgBurn

P2P-File Sharing: uTorrent, Gnucleus, Cabos, Vuze, BitComet, eMule, DC ++, Frostwire

Games: YoFrankie!, Cube 2, SuperTuxKart, Freeciv,  World of Padman

Graphic: Blender, Gimp, Paint.NET, IrfanView, PhotoFiltre, Picasa, XnView, Easy Thumbnails

Office: KomoZer, Freemind, Notepad++, Xe macs, OpenOffice, AbiWord, Adobe Reader, Bluefish

For that inevitable day, when you have to do a system rebuild, having this application installed on your USB drive will make the job much easier.

Update Freeware/Open Source Apps Automatically – FreewareUpdater

I’m a strong advocate of open source and freeware software applications, and have been since I began computing in the early 1980’s. In fact, 65 out of a total of 86 applications on my home machine are either open source, or freeware applications. So, just over 75% of the applications I use fairly frequently I’ve downloaded and installed at no cost to me.

I have no way of knowing if these statistics are high, or relatively normal, for an advanced user; without question they’re certainly not on the low side.

I do know that trying to keep open source and freeware applications updated with the latest version can often be a hassle. This is particularly true if, like me, the majority of your installed software is open source, or freeware applications.

To reduce the drudgery involved in manually updating to the latest software version you can subscribe to an Internet service that will help do the job for you, such as Freeware Updates. Alternatively, to retain more control over the update process, you can download and install a tiny application FreewareUpdater that will allow you to conveniently manage and update, the open source and freeware applications on your computer.

Simply download and install FreewareUpdater to your computer, and then update the application list using the application’s intuitive and user friendly interface. From now on the application will keep track of any updates to the software on this list.

When any of the listed applications are updated, or a new release is issued, the list will be automatically updated. Installing the update, or new release, is as easy as double clicking on the software in the list and FreewareUpdater will download and install it on your system.

Quick facts:

  • Collects data on freeware/open source software online
  • Automatic update of application list
  • Installs new applications directly from FreewareUpdater
  • Advises you on both installed, and non installed, applications

System Requirements: Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Microsoft .NET Framework
