Trap Malware With Toolwiz TimeFreeze

Toolwiz CareBack in April, I reviewed and highly recommended, a suite of freeware utility applications – Toolwiz Care. Having tested the application extensively, at the end of the day, it was no great leap in logic to say –  “This application is feature packed, and includes a wide range of tools that an average computer user should find powerful, efficient, and effective.”

One of the components included in this super suite is Time Freeze (recently released by the developer’s as a stand alone application) – a “one click simple” virtual system which, when active, virtualizes the operating system. In other words, a copy of the operating system is generated, and it’s within this “copy” – or sandbox, if you like – that all activity takes place. Keep in mind – the operating system is virtualized, only when Time Freeze is active.

So, why bother running in a virtualized environment, you might wonder? The answer is pretty simple – in most circumstances, there’s no real benefit. In fact, running virtualized may create a slight time lag in system response. There are, of course, particular circumstances in which running a virtual machine offers major  advantages – but, those circumstances (since I’ve covered this aspect numerous times in the past), are outside the scope of this review.

Instead, I’ll focus on the security aspect of running in virtual mode with Time Freeze when connected to the Internet. And, there can be significant security benefits.

Let’s assume, for example, that while surfing the Internet you fall victim to a drive-by download (more common than you might realize), while visiting an infected web site. Running in “real” mode would mean that you now have a significant problem on your hands. You can, if you like, believe that your AV application will protect you from the consequences – but, don’t count on it.

The same scenario, while running in virtual mode, will have an entirely different outcome. Since, in virtual mode – it’s a copy of the operating system which is facing the Internet – all system and application changes are restricted to the virtual environment. In other words – it’s the copy which has been infected. Simply rebooting the system does away with the copy, and with it – the infection.

Toolwiz Time Freeze, of all the virtual solutions I’ve reviewed over the past few years, has to be the simplest. It’s easy to use, non intrusive, and after initial setup, requires a minimum of user intervention – perfect for the average user.

Installation was hassle free – it was just a matter of  following the on-screen instructions.

Since the application place a small toolbar (shown below), on the Desktop – launching the application is a snap.

image

A quick click on the toolbar and, a click on “Start TimeFreeze”…………

… and, you’re in business.

image

Backing out of the application is equally as easy. At which time, you will have the option of saving any changes made to the system – or not. Not saving changes will require a reboot.

image

Fast facts:

Start up system protection. Prevents malicious threats being made and doing harm to your computer. It puts the actual system under protection and creates a virtual environment for system partition.

Simply reboot to restore your system to the previous state.

Don’t reboot to accept all the changes. It will take several minutes to save the changes to your real system.

Folder Protection – Help you to prohibit the changing of files by others.

Helps you to prohibit accessing the protected folders by others.

Protects your files from being infected by viruses or stolen by trojans.

Very easy switch between virtual & real system.

To enter virtual system, no need to reboot computer. To return to real system, just exit System Protection.

System requirements: Windows XP, Vista, Win 7, Win 8(32 bit and 64 bit)

FAQ for Toolwiz Time Freeze

A word of caution: There are no perfect solutions – this application will not protect you against rootkits. Developing safe surfing habits remains your best protection against malware infection.

A further word of caution: Although I’ve had no difficult with this application, there have been reports of system crashes caused by Toolwiz Time Freeze. It’s always good practice to occasionally create a Restore Point – just in case.

This just in: Jim Hillier over at Daves Computer Tips reports the following:

Hey Bill –

I was using Time Freeze pretty regularly to test software for review purposes. I actually stopped using Time Freeze because of persistent issues. Occasionally, after the reboot process, a random service would be stopped. It was no big deal, just go into Services and re-start whichever service had been affected. Then finally, after a reboot, the OS would not load at all. I tried everything to get the OS to boot but no go. I can only assume that this time an essential system service had been stopped. I ended up having to restore a recent image.

So, you may be better off avoiding this application.

Download Free SpyShelter Anti-Keylogger

image A software Keylogger, or system monitor, is a small program (not always malware, I should point out), that monitors every keystroke a user types on a computer’s keyboard.

Keyloggers are a particularly sinister type of malware, and are notorious for disabling Firewalls and anti-malware tools. This is a type of malware that I pay particular attention to, and make a special effort to guard against.

Since I test a lot of applications, I am continually amazed at the number of programs that request access to my keyboard, and screen, during installation. Unless there are valid reasons for this type of access, I don’t allow it. Surprisingly, in most cases the application installs correctly. Curious!

Regular reader Charles L. recently gave me a great tip on a freeware anti-logger application – SpyShelter Personal, which is also available in a paid version, SpyShelter premium.

SpyShelter is an anti-keylogging, anti-spyware program that protects your data from Keylogging and spy programs: known, unknown, and under-development.

It detects and block dangerous and malicious programs, to help ensure that your data cannot be stolen by cyber criminals.

The free version includes the following features:

  • System protection (HIPS)
  • Anti keylogger
  • AntiScreenCapture
  • AntiClipboardCapture

image

Setup is a snap, since the user interface follows the familiar tabbed menu system.

image

SpyShelter Fast facts:

Proactively scans when any spy program, Keylogger or Trojan attempts to store your private information.

Compatible with other well-known security products such as anti-virus and firewall software.

Protect your passwords, chat, credit card.

Fast algorithm process does not slow down your computer when scanning for dangerous items.

SpyShelter needs only a small amount of hardware and system resources.

Doesn’t need to check a signature database.

Simple, easy-to-use, intuitive GUI.

System requirements: Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 (32&64 bit).

Languages: English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Polish, Croatian, Serbian, Chinese, Turkish, Czech, Macedonian, Brazilian(Portuguese)

Download at: SpyShelter.com

____________________________________________________

There are additional remedies for this type of malware threat, including –

SnoopFree Privacy Shield (free):

image

SnoopFree Privacy Shield (which I’ve been running for years), is a free application that guards your keyboard, screen, and open windows from all such spy software.

It makes it virtually impossible for any spy program to work on your computer since SnoopFree Privacy Shield’s protection works against spy software in real time. Unfortunately, this application works on Windows XP only.

Download at: Download.com

Zemana AntiLogger (commercial):

image

Since my personal home machines now run on Windows 7, I can no longer protect against Keyloggers using SnoopFree Privacy Shield, so I had to find an alternative. Zemana AntiLogger, is a competitively priced anti-keylogger application that I have come to rely on since I installed it 6 months ago.

This is an impressive application, particularly the system defense function which intercepts proposed changes to system files NOT picked up by other security applications on my systems.

Since I use a Webcam extensively for communicating, the active Webcam protection offered by Zemana AntiLogger, is of special importance to me.

Zemana AntiLogger is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Win 7.

This application is not freeware, but is very well priced at $34.00 USD. You can download a 15 day trial version at: Zemana

We’re now half way through 2010, and as predicted, this year has being a banner year for cyber-criminals. Being prepared and being aware, while not a panacea, will continue to be a key element in mitigating risk exposure. If Keylogger protection is a concern, you should consider adding an anti-logger application to your security toolbox.

Get Organized with Free All My Notes Organizer

Popular guest writer Rick Robinette, is a very busy guy. I know Rick doesn’t have a lot of spare free time. Rick, who’s always on the hunt for the best in Freeware, has just come across All My Notes Organizer, a high performance personal information manager that’s very easy to use. Perfect for a busy guy!

After reading Rick’s review, I downloaded All My Notes Organizer myself.

Here’s Rick’s review:

I have always have had an attraction to software, such as personal information managers and sticky notes programs, to help me stay organized. I have tried and tested numerous types of these programs and many of them are very, very good; however there is always a downside.

Many of the personal information managers often carry with them a steep learning curve, and with many of the sticky notes programs I end up cluttering my desktop (with virtual sticky notes).

If only I could have a little of both worlds… Well, after a week of searching and testing I believe I found what I was looking for, in a program called AllMyNotes Organizer

image

AllMyNotes Organizer is simply a program that you use to centrally store and organize all your notes; whether it be recipes, to do lists, vacation plans, shopping lists, correspondence, a diary, blog articles, or private information. Anything you can imagine can be stored in AllMyNotes Organizer.

The best parts I like about using this notes organizer is that it is easy to use, has a very nice notes’ editor, is available as a portable app, all notes are searchable, can be password protected (using 1800 bit key), and is absolutely gorgeous.

One thing to point out…  AllMyNotes Organizer is available in a FREE version and a Deluxe (paid) version. When you download and run AllMyNotes Organizer you are treated to a 14 day trial of the Deluxe version. After the 14 days the software reverts to the FREE version, minus some of the options that were available in the Deluxe version.

In the end, the FREE version is still awesome and who knows you may like this enough to buy the Deluxe version.

Major Features:

Strong security: files are encrypted and can be password-protected. Data file on disk is encrypted using 1800-bit key even when password is unassigned, to do not leave a trace of your private information on hard drive or USB stick!

Functional and yet simple interface with skins and translated to number of languages (English, German, Spanish, French,Swedish, Italian, Portuguese (+Brazilian Portuguese), Czech, Croatian, Korean, Mainland Simplified Chinese, Taiwan Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish, more will be available soon…)

Powerful Global Search feature, for searching text across one or all notes with different options. Filter-on-typing for extra fast, real-time. Global search allows powerful Google-like query language (*).

System requirements: Windows 2000 and all higher versions – 2000/XP/Vista/7, including all server versions of Windows.

Download at: Developer’s site (Vladonai Software)

Free Digital Scrapbook Artist – A Crafty Application

image I’m going more than a little off topic this morning, to talk about Scrapbooking. Not because Scrapbooking is one of my interests – it doesn’t exactly go hand in glove with the practice of Internet security. But hey, there are days when I get a little tired of being the “Bad News Bear”, and as we all know, “a change is as good as a rest”.

I keep watch on the free applications offered by SerifSoftware, a company that often offers older versions of their applications (still very functional, even if slightly out of date), and I noticed that the company is now offering a free scrapbooking application – Digital Scrapbook Artist.

Since I’m familiar (in a limited way), with a Scrapbook site Audrey Pettit’s Weblog (A Peek Into My Scrappy World), I decided to take a look at Digital Scrapbook Artist, and scrapbooking. It turns out this is a hobby that is widely practiced, and one that has millions of fans. Who knew?

Some surprising statistics from Wikipedia:

Over 25 million people in the United States alone, consider themselves to be scrapbookers.

Almost 30% of all U.S. households have at least one family member who scrapbooks.

Scrapbooking is the fastest growing sector of the craft and hobby industry, and now considered to be the third most popular craft in the nation. From 2002 to 2004, sales of scrapbooking products increased by over 27% across the United States.

As of 2003, there were over 4,000 independent scrapbook stores in the United States. Most major craft stores such as Hobby Lobby and Michaels Crafts, also have extensive selections of scrapbooking supplies.

I’m not a scrapbooker, so there would be no point in me testing this application – so I’ll leave it to SerifSoft to convince you that this application is worth taking a look at. How far wrong can you go with FREE?

From SerifSoft:

Digital Scrapbook Artist Compact is a completely free download and will help you to quickly and easily transform your photos and memories into wonderfully personal artwork that you will cherish forever.

image

  • Not a trial version! 100% free, fully functional software.
  • Incredibly easy to use, fun and fast.
  • Suitable for everyone, regardless of experience.
  • Choose any page size, including card templates.
  • Share with family and friends quickly and easily.

Download now, and you’ll soon be able to create scrapbooks, beautiful digital albums, invitations and greetings cards without having to spend a penny on materials or wasting any time.

image

We’ve included a mini digikit to get you started, and there’s a selection of free themed kits for you to download at DaisyTrail.com!

What The Press Say…

“Finally, a software program for digital scrapbooking is available that is exactly what I was looking for. You will love how easy it is to get scrapbooking”

Rebecca Ludens, About.com (5/5)

“If you love to scrapbook, this is perfect software to get! Why keep those photos locked up on your computer, when you can bring them to life with Digital Scrapbook Artist.”

Tanya Gordon, Mommy Goggles

“This brilliant software offers endless potential for creating fantastic layouts – A must-have crafting resource!”

Kate Hemmings, Crafts Beautiful Online Editor

Guard Your Sensitive Files With My Lockbox Freeware

image Rick Robinette at What’s On My PC, recently wrote a couple of intriguing articles on some esoteric ways cyber-criminals can gain access to the confidential information many of us keep on our computers.

If you think your confidential files are cyber-criminal proof, because you consider yourself an astute and savvy Internet user, and your machine is protected by the latest and greatest AV products – take a look at Atypical Ways of How Your Data Can Be Stolen, and Are Wireless Keyboards Secure?, on Rick’s site. You might be in for a surprise.

Reading these two articles has prompted me to republish the following article on how we can take advantage of the freeware program My Lockbox, to keep confidential files hidden from view.

You might wonder why you would need to conceal files on your computer in the first place; after all you have nothing to hide, right? Well if you’re like the rest of us, it’s almost certain that you do have something to hide.

At a minimum, it would be sensible to conceal files that contain financial data and other confidential information, that can easily be subject to intrusive viewing by others not authorized to do so.

Files that contain financial data and other confidential information continue to be targeted by hackers/information thieves, for the purpose of identity theft. The reality is; there is no such thing as a totally secured internet connected computer; all internet connected computers are subject to attack. Masking these files then, seems like a sensible precaution.

image

Confidentially of course, may not be the only reason you may have to conceal files. On a shared computer for example, it may be prudent to conceal particular files to ensure that they are not subject to accidental erasure. In fact, you may have lots of personal reasons to mask special files on your machine.

My Lockbox is a freeware software application that allows you to conceal files, and then password protect those files on your computer. Other users will not have access to these files, nor will they be able to accidentally, or otherwise, view them or manipulate them in any way.

The protected folder (lockbox) is hidden from all other users and applications on your computer; including the Administrator and the System. The lockbox (protected folder), is impossible to access not only from the local computer, but also from the Internet.

Following the on-screen instructions makes this program extremely easy to setup and use. The lockbox location, password, and parameters are configured during the easy setup procedure.

After the setup is completed, the lockbox will be hidden and locked until you, as the user, enter the valid password. My Lockbox Control Panel allows you easily change basic lockbox parameters: lockbox location, protection status, and password.

The program is effective, easy to use and best of all – it’s free.

Quick facts:

Very easy to use

Almost any folder on your computer can be password protected

Instant protection – no file scrambling

Lockbox folder is inaccessible even by the system administrators

Lockbox folder is inaccessible both locally and remotely

Lockbox folder can be protected in Windows safe mode

Hotkeys support – you can popup the Control Panel with a keystroke

Skinned user interface

Freeware

System Requirements: Windows 2000, XP, 2003 Server, Vista

Download at: Download.com.

Elsewhere in this Blog there is a review, and file download, for a similar type of program that encrypts, as well as conceals your files. The following is part of the review for this open source free program… “T r u e C r y p t is a free open-source disk encryption program for Windows and Linux, which creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk. The program automatically and transparently encrypts in real time”.
