FreeApps Downloader Not Up To The Competition

imageThis year we’ve looked at a number of what I call ”bulk downloaders” – services/applications that download and install multiple user selected applications, in one pass.

So far this year we’ve looked at Ninite, which provides a generous listing of freeware applications, LiberKey which installs up to 180+portable applications, and ZeuAPP, which makes it easy to download a host of freeware programs.

Now, we have additional choice in this software arena with the release of FreeApps. I’ve heard some good things about this new entry, and decided to give it a try.

The basic premise with all these services/applications is, you choose your applications from a smorgasbord menu.

For example, the following FreeApps screen capture shows I choose – Smart Defrag, Open Office, CutePDF Writer, VLC Media Player, and DAEMON Tools Lite. (This screen shot shows only a partial list of the available applications)

Once your selection is made, you then give permission for the installer to be download to your computer.

When the setup file is executed from your download location, a three stage process is activated, as the following screen shots indicate.

As it turned out, I choose to cancel CutePDF Writer and DAEMON Tools Lite, since they both contain a “hated” toolbar.

As well, I choose to cancel downloading OpenOffice since the download speed was far to slow at 32 kbit/s. Downloading directly from the developer’s site would have been dramatically faster.

Overall impression:

I found this application needlessly complicated, slow to respond, and whereas Ninite does not install toolbars with the applications you choose, this application does. A major blunder in my view. For more on toolbar blunders, see – We Don’t Want No Stinkin’ Toolbar! here on this site.

If this application was the only application of its type, it would still be a long stretch to give it a lukewarm recommendation. Since it isn’t, I suggest you avoid this application altogether. The competition, especially Ninite, has it beaten hands down.
