AddonFox – A Multi Firefox Add-on Download Wizard

imageThroughout the year, we’ve looked at a number of what I call ”bulk downloaders” – services/applications that download and install multiple user selected applications, in one pass.

So far this year we’ve looked at Ninite, which provides a generous listing of freeware applications, LiberKey which installs up to 180+portable applications, and ZeuAPP, which makes it easy to download a host of freeware programs. As well, we looked at a number of others that, in the end, were not up to the task.

The basic premise with all these services/applications is – you choose your applications from a smorgasbord menu.

I must admit, that based on readers’ comments, these applications are not as popular as I expected. Who knew? Still, given that I perform an OS reinstall at six month intervals on each of my home machines, I find this type of application, especially Ninite, a valuable addition to my utility toolbox.

Linkular, has taking this multi download concept to another level by releasing AddonFox, which is described as “an install wizard for Firefox addons, enabling users to choose which categories they are interested in. The user is then presented with a list of extensions to choose from, which are then installed en masse.”

The following screen captures should give you a good feel for what you can expect if you choose to install this extension/wizard.

For illustrative purposes, I have chosen to display both the “Customization” and the “Media” add-on menus, only.

Clicking on any “More Info” link opens that particular add-on’s information page. In this representative example, I clicked on the Cooliris “More Info” link which then opened the appropriate page.

AddonFox includes over 100 add-ons in its smorgasbord style menu, neatly broken down into the following categories.

    Hi Bill,
Just did a OS reinstall yesterday. Seems COOL! Got to try it..
    Thanks

    • Hey Ranjan,

I did an OS reinstall yesterday as well – great minds think alike! This add-on could be very helpful for this type of situation.

      Good to hear from you.

      Bill

Thanks for the write-up, Bill. But for me, this is nothing but a headache, having to search through all the listed add-ons to find the ones I’m after as part of a reinstall. For me, the simplest (and best … c’mon) option is the Firefox FEBE add-on. IMO, this is the most valuable of all add-ons. In one click, I can backup all my extensions, themes, bookmarks, etc. And then if and when I have to reinstall, I simply reinstall Firefox, reinstall FEBE and then restore. All done in one swift and easy hit. No mucking around. Bill, Bill, Bill … why are you adding unnecessary complications to what FEBE already does so beautifully and so simply? I’m shaking my head in dismay! (And smiling of course.)

    • Hey Siam.

Oh Oh!. I’ve left you with the impression that I recommend this applet as part of a reinstall. No, No, No……. I totally agree with you – FEBE, or for some, MozBackup is the appropriate tool. So, stop shaking you’re head – it’ll soon start to hurt. 🙂

The point I was trying to make, early on in this article was – Ninite, and applications like it, are valuable for a reinstall. As you point out, (much better than I have), AddonFox would be “nothing but a headache”.

This is what happens when I party late on a Friday night. 🙂

      Best,

      Bill

    Hi Bill.
    Thanks for the article.
But mainly I agree with your “6 month” rule. It should be mandatory.
    Regards,
    Jose.

P.S. A friend of mine with a Windows 7 64 bit machine needs a program on the lines of Secunia. This last one doesn’t work properly (neither on mine, both are HP maybe that’s why).
File Hippo doesn’t work either (on his, it works on my Vista 32 bit).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    • Hi Jose,

Good to hear you agree with the “6 month” rule. And, you’re right – it should be mandatory.

I don’t run on x64, but it was my understanding that both PSI (version 2 Beta), and File Hippo’s Update Checker, run on x64 systems. Strange that HP machines might be an issue.

    Hey Bill,

This looks very good for the user who has a lot of addons in his/her Firefox. Personally, I keep Firefox “lean and mean”, using only a few addons for enhanced security, which I back up with Mozbackup.

    Cheers

  6. Grr
