Defrag Smartly With Free Smart Defrag

May 2, 2009 · 7 Comments

image Fragmentation is caused by creating and deleting files and folders, installing new software, and downloading files from the Internet.

When you delete files or folders, the first available empty spaces on the Hard Drive are filled in randomly when you create new files and folders, as you do when you save pics from your camera, install software, save emails, or create documents.

Hard Disk fragmentation makes the disk drive heads move more than necessary when reading files which can degrade performance over time, and can lead to system slowdowns, computer crashes, slow startups and shutdowns.

But wait a minute – a fairly common point of view (espoused by many techs), holds that defragging a Hard Drive is pointless, and provides no measurable increase in system performance. On the other hand, there is also considerable support for the point of view as described above.

So which point of view then is more likely to be accurate, given that hard disk fragmentation makes the disk drive heads move more than necessary when reading files, which can lead to reduced performance in file input and output?

Despite the fact that it is difficult, to measure an increase in system performance following Hard Drive defragmentation, there is a slight leaning in the tech community toward defragmentation being a positive maintenance process. I support this point of view.

Smart Defrag is a great free tool to help you defrag on a scheduled, 0r unscheduled basis. CNET (which has great testing facilities), has chosen Smart Defrag as an Editor’s choice for April. That’s a pretty good recommendation, I think.

Fast facts:

Quick analysis and scans – defragment disks in minutes

Continuous, automated defragger (runs in the background)

Scheduler

Improve computer performance and stability

Increase your productivity – no more waiting for files to open

Clean, straightforward interface

Smart defrag 1

Operating Systems: Windows Vista, XP, 2000. and Windows 7

Before you begin a defrag process it’s important to run a program such as CCleaner which will empty your Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files folder, and other locations where clutter tends to accumulate on your PC.

As well, you should consider uninstalling any applications you no longer use. Revo Uninstaller is a free utility that will uninstall unneeded applications more thoroughly than the Windows native uninstaller.

Free File Shredder 2 – Delete Files Permanently!

March 22, 2009 · 2 Comments

Scissors Many of us now own, and use a paper file shredder to destroy documents, and personal and financial papers that we don’t want to fall into the hands of identity thieves, or anyone else not entitled to have access.

So now, consider those files on your computer that you’ve deleted, sent to the recycle bin, and then flushed as you emptied the recycle bin. When you go through this process the deleted files are gone forever, right?

Well if you’re a typical computer user, you quite likely do believe that they’re gone forever, since the deleted files can’t be seen in Windows Explorer. In fact, you can’t find these files anywhere on your Hard Drive.

It may surprise you to learn that not only can I find those files but I can recover them as well. Oh, it’s not because I’m a super- duper tech wizard – although I will say, with some modesty, that I am. LOL.

Here’s the lowdown: when a file is deleted from your Hard Drive, what really gets deleted is the system link pointing towards the file, but not the file itself. Surprisingly, it is relatively easy to retrieve the deleted file using specialized file recovery software (often available as a free download), which takes advantage of shortcomings in the Windows operating systems.

Let me give you an example. Recently, I agreed to rebuild 30+ computers (at no cost), being donated to a local charity for distribution to less fortunate families.

While working on these machines I noticed immediately that although the Hard Drives had undergone deletion, they had not been wiped. Since these machine had been donated by a government agency; that struck me as being negligent in the extreme.

In order to bring this situation to the attention of those who had committed this serious breach in security, I recovered a number of these files. Not unexpectedly, the recovered files did in fact did contain confidential information. In this case – confidential information on families on public assistance. As part of the process, I saved the recovered files to a floppy disk and presented the disk to the appropriate authorities. Shock, surprise, embarrassment, were just some of the reactions.

It’s easy to see from this example, that deleted files (or a good portion of a file) can easily be recovered.

File Shredder 3

In order to delete or shred files permanently, to protect your privacy and potentially your security, or for any other reason for that matter, you need a program such as File Shredder 2 that is capable of overwriting the file with a random series of binary data multiple times.

This process is often called shredding. That way, the actual content of the file has been overwritten and the possibilities of recovering such a shredded file becomes mainly theoretical.

File Shredder 2 (rated by CNET’s editors as a 5 Star utility), is a simple but powerful program, with a straightforward interface, that many users judge to be better than some commercial file shredders. With File Shredder 2 you can remove files from your hard drive permanently, and feel confident that the file can’t be recovered.

File Shredder 4

Running the program allows you to choose between 5 different shredding algorithms, each one gradually stronger than the previous one. As well, it has an integrated Disk Wiper which uses a shredding algorithm to wipe unused disk space. I use this feature frequently, to clean up my drives (after running test applications), and to destroy any leftover fragments of previously deleted/uninstalled files.

If you’re looking for a great free file shredder application that does what it says it does, in an easy to understand manner, I highly recommend File Shredder 2.

Diagnose, Maintain, Clean Hard Drives With These Free Tools

March 19, 2009 · 4 Comments

Hard Drive Diag Arguably, the Hard Drive is the most important element in a personal computer since it holds, in many cases, an accumulation of information that is of real and perhaps irreplaceable value: documents, digital photos, email messages, personal and business related work and important private data.

The upside of today’s high density disks is; modern disks allows for greater storage capacities and higher access speeds. The downside is however; with densities and capacities pushed to the extreme there is much more information to lose should the drive fail.

So what do you think the chances of a Hard Drive failing are? Surprisingly computer industry statistics seem to indicate that the real-world annualized failure rate (average percentage of disks failing per year), was much higher than the manufacturers’ estimate – an average of 3% vs. the estimated 0.5 – 0.9%.

In fact, just at the moment, I’m dealing with a failing Hard Drive on one of my home machines. This is the third Hard Drive failure I have personally had to deal with, in the last 18 months.

If you should suffer catastrophic Hard Drive failure and you are one of the few, out of the ordinary, computer users who regularly and faithfully backup, you will have a lot of work ahead of you but you will recover. If you do not have a backup plan, it’s time you though seriously about developing one.

Fortunately though, today’s Hard Drives rarely fail without a warning of failure given well in advance. All modern Hard Drives are equipped with a feature known as S.M.A.R.T. that provides real-time analysis and the reporting of any developing problems and potential issues. The big question is: can you read the warnings?

The following free applications take the guesswork out of the equation, and they make it easier than ever to diagnose what’s really occurring inside the complex environment of the Hard Drive.

Slow Computer? – 6 Free Solutions

February 7, 2009 · 26 Comments

It seems to be inevitable that a computer running a Windows based operating system will slow down over time.

There may be numerous reasons why your computer behaves badly and is no longer the speed demon it once was. Simple maintenance, practiced regularly, which is easy even for a non-expert, can keep your Windows based PC running smoothly at peak performance for years.

The most common problems that have impact on a computer’s speed and behavior are listed here, with the appropriate free software solution. This is not however, an exhaustive list.

In most cases, since a slow computer is generally being impacted by more than one problem, you will probably find that you will have to resolve the issue using more than a single solution.

Your computer takes a long time to boot and operates slowly.

Too many programs loading on system startup is a common cause of longer than normal boot up times.

Solution: WinPatrol

winpatrol-2

Using WinPatrol you can monitor your startup programs and services, cookies and current tasks. Should you need to, WinPatrol allows you to terminate processes and enable, or disable, startup programs. There are additional features that make WinPatrol a very powerful addition to your utility toolbox.

A jam-packed, jumbled registry can be one of the chief causes of computer slowdown and malfunction. A messy registry can often put a brake on your system, cause programs to stop working properly, and aggravate you while you hang around waiting for the operating system to load at a snails pace.

Solution: Regseeker

reg-result-2

Many applications, on being uninstalled, leave behind “orphan” registry entries. They don’t remove all traces of themselves; causing problems such as sluggish performance, system lockups, or a bloated registry that takes longer to load on startup. With the click of a button, Regseeker will scan your registry for these fragmented files, and safely remove them.

Fast facts:

Scans and cleans your registry

Your Hard Drive is full.

A full Hard Drive will not function efficiently since you require at least 2 – 3MB of free space for programs to run smoothly. If you lack this much free space, you should uninstall unused programs on your primary drive.

Solution: Revo Uninstaller

revouninstaller

Revo Uninstaller is a superior program to uninstall programs from your computer. This free program with its advanced and fast algorithm scans before, and after you uninstall an application. December 12, 2008 · 4 Comments

If you’re like me, I bet you just love your USB flash drives. Using flash drives, we can carry our favorite portable computer programs to work; bring our favorite music or games when partying with friends, or (sigh) we can take the office with us (without lugging the laptop), when we finally go off on that much deserved vacation!

If you’ve been searching for a fast and powerful uninstaller application for your USB drive, then Revo Uninstaller Portable is for you.

VS Revo Group, the developer of the original Revo Uninstaller, has released a portable version of this highly recommended (5 Star at CNET), utility. This free application with its advanced and fast algorithm scans before, and after, you uninstall an application.

To install Revo Uninstaller simply download the application from the developer’s site, extract the ZIP file to a folder, and then copy that folder to your flash drive and voila, you’re good to go!

(Click pic for larger)

How it works:

After the program, selected for deletion, regular uninstaller runs, you can remove additional unnecessary files, folders and registry keys that the Windows Add or Remove Programs applet usually leaves behind. This feature can save you from having to run a Registry Cleaner to finish the job.

Even if you have a broken installation, Revo Uninstaller scans for the application’s data on your drives and in the Windows registry, and shows all found files, folders and registry items so that they can be deleted.

Repair Drives, Files, Folders with Free Disk Heal

December 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

While it’s true that most anti-malware applications will remove an executable malware file from your system, depending on the infection, it is not uncommon that it will be unable to reverse the damage already done.

In many cases the user will be left to deal with the following problems.

Drive inaccessibility

Task Manager inaccessibility

Folder Options inaccessibility

Registry Editor inaccessibility

It’s not necessary to be a Techno Geek to deal with these types of problems; there are a number of manual methods to resolve these issues. But for the casual or new computer user, the solution may be outside their technical abilities. Fortunately, there is a free solution that is new user friendly.

Disk Heal is a free Windows NT, 2000, XP and Vista utility that may be able to restore the condition of your Hard Drive, or a USB Flash Drive, after it has been being infected by a virus.

This free application is a very useful tool that has a host of additional capabilities, including recovering hidden files and performing system tweaks; all can be accessed with just one click.

Quick facts:

Fixes disk problems

Fixes task manager inaccessibility

Fixes folder options inaccessibility

Fixes registry editor inaccessibility

Recovers hidden files and folders

Changes the default icon of any drive, external, internal, or a partition

Security and system tweaks

As you’re building your toolbox of system utilities, this is a good application to add. None of us are immune to a virus infection, and at some point you’ll be glad you had this little tool ready to go.

10 Free System Tools to Get Your PC in Shape

December 1, 2008 · 11 Comments

Soon, many of us will be making those dreaded New Years resolutions once again.

Generally, our resolutions tend to run along these lines – get in shape, lose weight, quit drinking or smoking, and one that’s going to be more popular this year no doubt; get out of debt.

One that’s on my list is the resolution to get organized. Getting organized, for me, always includes the promise that I will keep my computer systems clean, both physically and from a system perspective. Somehow, this one reappears on my list of resolutions, year after year.

With that in mind, I revisited some of the system tools I’ve rated and recommended over the last year or so, and I’ve promised myself to make better use of them in 2009. These free applications are “the best of breed”, in my view.

If you have favorites that you’d like to see added to this list, then let me know with your comments.

Click each pic for a larger view.

CCleaner

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally, it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast; normally taking less than a second to run.

Glary Utilities

Glary Utilities, a free all-in-one utility, is a terrific collection of system tools and utilities to fix, speed up, maintain and protect your PC. Personal experience with this application for the last 8 months has convinced me that a typical user can really benefit by having this application on their system. With this free program you can tweak, repair, optimize and improve your system’s performance; and its ease of operation makes it ideal for less experienced users.

Evonsoft Computer Repair

According to the developers, with one click, Evonsoft Computer Repair will scan your computer and provide a list of the errors found by the application. You will then have the choice of cleaning each item individually, or allow the application to repair the errors automatically.

In my own testing, I found that the application was extremely fast and that it worked as advertised. I did find however, that the lack of a clear explanation left me feeling slightly uncomfortable. I suspect that more advanced users might also feel the same way.

On the other hand, this lack of explanation might be the very feature that the new user will find most appealing about this application. Most new computer users, in my experience, don’t want to know the details; they just want the job done.

WinPatrol

Do you want to get a better understanding of what programs are being added to your computer? Then WinPatrol is the program for you. With WinPatrol, in your system tray, you can monitor system areas that are often changed by malicious programs. You can monitor your startup programs and services, cookies and current tasks. Should you need to, WinPatrol allows you to terminate processes and enable, or disable, startup programs. There are additional features that make WinPatrol a very powerful addition to your security applications.

Revo Uninstaller

Revo Uninstaller is a superior program to uninstall programs from your computer. This free program with its advanced and fast algorithm scans before, and after you uninstall an application. After the program’s regular uninstaller runs, you can remove additional unnecessary files, folders and registry keys that are usually left over (those “orphaned” registry entries we talked about earlier), on your computer. This feature is a definite plus.

Autoruns

This free utility has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, in my view, and shows you what programs are configured to run during system boot up or login, and the order Windows processes them. These programs will include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure Autoruns to show additional locations, including Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and more. Autoruns goes considerably beyond the MSConfig utility bundled with Windows.

Regseeker

The longer you use Windows, the more cluttered your registry can become, especially if you regularly install and uninstall software.

Wise Registry Cleaner

Wise Registry Cleaner is a free, non aggressive application that, as one of my friends says, hits a home run in the safety department. As it searches the Registry for obsolete/redundant registry keys, it differentiates between those that are “safe to fix”, and those that are “not fully safe to fix”. To provide the greatest safety factor for those who are uncomfortable, or unfamiliar, with cleaning the Registry, the application’s default removal setting is “safe to fix”.

Fresh UI

One of the oldest and most well established free Windows tweaking applications, Freshdevices’ Fresh UI is a powerful tool that allows you to configure and optimize your version of Windows.

This small (1.24 MB) program has a clean, easy to understand interface that gives you access to hundreds of system settings, some of which are hidden, and others that are just hard to find. The interface is organized by section for easy navigation, and it is complete with detailed descriptions for easy reference.

Auslogics Disk Defrag

The program is extremely easy to use, does not require any analysis phase and is faster than most disk defragmentation software I’ve tested in the past, and it’s free. In my view, it’s one more maintenance process in helping me get the maximum performance out of my hardware.

Finally Fast.com – Fast Scam! Free Alternative Software

October 27, 2008 · 131 Comments

When it came to titling this article I was stuck between, what’s up on top of this article and this, “Finally Fast.com – Computing for Dummies with Money!”

Anyone who has even a basic knowledge of computing would have to laugh outright watching the commercial for Finally Fast.com and the Windows PC services they offer.

While it was not the first clue that something was wrong with this commercial, I had to LMAO when I saw the MacBook, in the commercial, showing a “blue screen of death”. An outrageous faux pas in my view – after all this is supposedly a Windows based PC service.

It’s not the first commercial I’ve seen selling Windows based Pc services, (they seem to be popping up all over), but I must admit; it’s the first one I’ve seen where the actors are using iMacs and iBooks in place of a proper Windows based PC.

I suppose I would have just passed on this commercial and not bothered writing an article on Finally Fast.com, except for the fact that the commercial made a major point of referring to coverage of the company, and products, in Newsweek, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal. Based on this, I decided to check out their website.

The first thing that occurred on arriving on the Finally Fast.com site was my Internet Browser protector WOT (Web of Trust), warning curtain was activated warning me that this was a dangerous site. Incidentally, if you’re not yet protected by WOT check out “Safer Surfing with WOT – Find out How!”, on this Blog.

The second thing, I did, was to query the Newsweek, Forbes and Wall Street Journal websites, for any references to Finally Fast, or its parent company, Ascentive Software. Not surprisingly, I found no references to either despite the claim. It also struck me that no links are provided from the company’s site to this supposed coverage.

You would think that coverage by such esteemed publications like Newsweek, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal would prompt a linkback.

Finally, I ran a check on each software application touted by the company, and found that in most cases, the software was either rated as malware, no independent reviews existed, or the software had been roundly criticized by users.

My conclusion: While I won’t go so far as to call this company and its software applications useless, or suggest that the company is run by scam artists at best, or thieves at the worst, I will say this – don’t waste your time, or your money.

The following is a rundown of the products offered by this company. In addition you’ll find listed, free, well tested, and well known, alternative software application that will do the job with vastly improved functionality.

(You can click on any pic to get a larger view)

Their Product: ActiveSpeed (thumbs down by CNET user reviewers)

Free Alternative: Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2 – Ashampoo Internet Accelerator is a great little application that makes it easy to perform this simply task. Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2 is an excellent free Internet connection optimizer.

Their Product: SpeedScan Pro (described as malware/deceptive)

Free Alternative: Regseeker – The longer you use Windows, the more cluttered your registry can become, especially if you regularly install and uninstall software.

Their Product: PC Scan&Sweep (no independent reviews)

Free Alternative: CCleaner – CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast; normally taking less than a second to run.

Their Product: Spyware Striker Pro (described as malware)

Free Alternative: Spyware Terminator – Having tested virtually all of the major anti-spyware applications over the past year or more, I’ve settled, for now, on Spyware Terminator primarily due to its strong real-time protection against spyware, adware, Trojans, key-loggers, home page hijackers and other malware threats. Spyware Terminator excels in strong active protection against know and unknown threats.

For additional information on SpeedScan Pro, including actual test results, read  TechPaul’s article FinallyFast Exposed (aka FastAtLast).

Evonsoft Computer Repair – Free, One Click System Utility

October 1, 2008 · 2 Comments

System utilities that incorporate multiple functions such as a Registry Cleaner, Junk File Remover, Privacy Cleanup, and in some applications, even more functionality, can be intimidating to new computer users.

New users are very often unfamiliar with both the technology itself, and the technical terms involved in using this type of application.

While it’s generally true that more advanced users want/need much more control than a one click system utility provides, this type of utility can be the ideal solution for a new user.

Evonsoft Computer Repair is one such advanced system utility for Windows that allows the user to safely remove spyware, clean the registry, sweep for privacy issues, and clean junk files with a single mouse click.

Quick facts:

Scans and removes spyware and adware

Cleans your System and should boost performance

Repairs your PC and keeps it tuned

Very easy to use

Free – no adware, spyware, or viruses

System Requirements: 32-bit Windows Vista, XP, 2000, and 2003 Server.
