Trojans – 71% of New Malware Strains Says Panda Security

malware.jpgAccording to data from PandaLabs, Panda Security’s laboratory for detecting and analyzing malware, 71% of new malware strains created in the last three months of 2007 were Trojans.

This confirms the current trend of Trojans being the most common type of new malware to appear, quarter after quarter. In fact, the amount of new malicious code in circulation is increasing fivefold every six months.

Other types of malicious code, notably worms, have receded in prevalence in the last quarter of 2007. Whereas in the previous quarter worms accounted for 11% of all new malware, in the last three months of the year this figure dropped to 5%.

Adware, on the other hand, rose from 9% to 21% over the same period.  One of the reasons behind the increase could be the rise in online shopping over the Christmas period.

Adware is designed to display advertising, and such a busy period for e-commerce could be interpreted by cyber-crooks as a good moment to launch their new creations, said Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs.

In terms of the number of infections, Trojans also headed the list. In fact they accounted for 33% of infections detected by panda’s ActiveScan over the last three months of 2007.

Adware with 23% was second in the number of infections, followed by worms (9%), spyware (3%) and dialers (3%).
